Curator Jae Seok Kim (@indra_kim) takes us on a tour of the Jongno neighbourhood, from the inside of his apartment and ‘home’ gallery @Xlargegallery, to the artist-run and queer-friendly spaces and bars of the industrial Euljiro neighbourhood. Stops include the shops @WaterandAir.kr and CORD, the architectural remnants of the historic Pagoda movie theatre – once a gathering place for Seoul’s gay community – and Bar Friends, which welcomes all ‘regardless of sexual orientation, gender identification, religion, age, race, ethnicity, nationality, disability, and/or HIV status.’ Plus exhibition spaces @PCO.seoul and @DoosanCenter_Gallery which fortify South Korea’s artist support system. 백白, 조선의 꿈을 빚다
국립중앙박물관 National Museum of Korea on Instagram: "백白, 조선의 꿈을 빚다 조선이 건국되면서 푸른 청자의 시대가 가고 하얀 백자의 시대가 시작되었습니다. 조선은 유교 질서를 세우고 중앙집권을 강화하며 나라의 기틀을 갖추었습니다. 나라에서는 전국의 물자와 장인을 엄격하게 관리했고, 이를 바탕으로 도자 기술이 눈부시게 발전했습니다. 고려 말 쇠락한 청자는 인화印花분청사기 변모하며 다시금 전성기를 맞이하고, 마침내 새하얀 경질백자가 탄생했습니다. 조선 건국 후 200여 년 동안은 우리 역사상 가장 다양한 도자가 공존했습니다. 1부에서는 조선 전기 도자를 살펴보며 백색을 향한 정신과 새로운 미감으로 여정을 시작합니다. White – Shaping the Dreams of Joseon The founding of the Joseon Dynasty brought an end to the period of Goryeo celadon, while opening a new era of white porcelain. Guided by Confucian principles, the new leaders of Joseon quickly set out to establish order and a solid national framework. They implemented a centralized system for controlling artistic resources and overseeing artisans throughout the country, leading to remarkable advances in ceramic techniques. The declining celadon of late Goryeo enjoyed a renaissance in the modified form of buncheong ware decorated with stamped designs. This was followed by the birth of “hard quality” white porcelain with a pure white color. The first 200 years of the Joseon Dynasty saw the coexistence of the most diverse range of ceramics in Korean history. Part 1 of the exhibition introduces a new spirit and aesthetic journey based on the color white. 국립중앙박물관 National Museum of Korea on Instagram: "묵墨, 인문으로 세상을 물들이다 유교를 통치 이념으로 삼은 조선이 건국되면서 사람의 수양과 도덕을 중시하는 인문人文시대가 열렸습니다. 사대부들은 시와 글씨, 그림에 자신의 이상을 담았습니다. 그들이 남긴 글과 그림은 조선을 물들이며 문文의 힘으로 세상을 다스리는 문치文治의 바탕이 되었습니다. 검지만 오색五色을 담은 먹은 사대부의 내면을 은유적으로 드러내는 도구로, 자연과 만나며 더 깊은 의미를 지니게 되었습니다. 수묵산수화의 풍경은 단순한 경치가 아니라 사대부가 꿈꾼 이상세계이자 내면을 확장하는 창이었습니다. 2부에서는 서화를 통해 사대부들이 바라본 세계와 품었던 인문정신을 들여다봅니다. 한 점 한 점에 담긴 그들의 생각과 마음을 따라가며 그 시대의 풍경을 함께 느껴보시기를 바랍니다 Ink — Visualizing Self-cultivation and Virtue With its firm basis in Confucianism, the Joseon Dynasty represented a new humanist era prioritizing self-cultivation and moral virtue. This new society was led by the scholar officials, who expressed their ideals through poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Their writings and artworks not only manifested the ideology of Joseon, but also strengthened state governance through the power of culture and scholarship. Employing the limitless expressive potential of ink, which had long been a staple material in calligraphy and painting, scholar officials metaphorically conveyed their principles and inner worlds. The symbolic efficacy of ink was fully utilized in conceptual landscapes that portray idyllic realms envisioned by the scholar officials, rather than actual scenes from nature. Gold — Embodying Eternal Prayer Even after the founding of Joseon and the rise of Confucianism, Buddhism maintained a powerful presence. While its role in public affairs diminished, Buddhism served as a critical source of comfort in times of great sorrow or suffering, transcending ideology or social causes. From the royal family to the scholar officials and commoners, people of all classes continued to perform Buddhist rituals and create Buddhist art. Even as the strict tenets of Confucianism took hold, the devotion to crafting radiant gold Buddha statues never faltered. The timeless artworks in this section show the enduring Buddhist faith of early Joseon, which has stood the test of time like gold, which never tarnishes. While Backpack of Wings: Modern Mythology raises concerns about the potential for data extractivism, Pĭlacommúnĭtas presents animals not as passive data providers but as active agents capable of sensing climate change. The information they perceive is shared as open source, envisioning a hyperconnected future Earth where the wall of anthropocentrism has been dismantled. Differences in communication speeds between servers in nine cities around the world are spatialized through the timing of video playback and the reverberation of sound, revealing that the simultaneity we perceive on the internet is, in fact, a form of asynchrony. Reminiscent of Nam June Paik’s exploration of the potential of television, this work—and Honam Kim’s reflections on it—can be found on YouTube channel of NJP Art Center. Through sculptural forms resembling flower bouquets once laid upon the graves of the dead and three video monitors, the installation recalls a tragedy often forgotten in daily life and sheds light on the shadows of loss left across cultures by the railway’s construction. By addressing loss as a universal human experience, the work invites understanding and connection across differences. The blue energy that radiates through the video evokes the enduring presence of the spirits, still breathing beside us. The journey of Lim Chae-eun, who ventured to the ends of the earth in search of the aurora, resonates with the artist’s own pursuit of forward movement, weaving a narrative of “progress.” In this exhibition, Goyoson continues to push the boundaries of traditional sculpture, highlighting ordinary individuals as central figures in the creative process and inviting viewers to become part of the artwork itself.
