Frieze on Instagram: "Koo Jeong A (@koojeonga) opens their solo show at Leeum Museum of Art today, coinciding with their inclusion in PKM’s Frieze Seoul presentation (@pkmgallery). At Leeum (@leeummuseumofart), ‘Ousssmos’ surveys three decades of Koo’s work – from phosphorescence and scents to skateparks and bronze sculptures – in their largest solo show in Korea to date. In this video, the artist explains the ideas of weightlessness and unreality that inspire their work, including the sculptures from their ‘Kangse’ series, on view at Frieze and Leeum: big-headed humanoid figures in different materials and at different scales, sometimes with the addition of scent or other media, they appear to float or balance in space. Koo’s works transform and alter in response to light, temperature and the presence or absence of people. ‘I think of my work evolving as time and organisms evolve,’ muses Koo. We go behind-the-scenes with artist @ryanjgander for ‘The Find Seoul’, which distributes 16,000 coins – each one with a binary choice inscribed on it – across Seoul during Frieze Week. As Gander explains, ‘The Find’ is more than just a glorified treasure hunt (unless you see the whole of the art world as a glorified treasure hunt). It’s about value and its meaning. ‘It’s not staged,’ he says. ‘You're in real public space.’ The choices it triggers – pause/action, solo/together, listen/speak – have ‘real-world consequences’. ‘Pretty much everywhere globally, we measure the world by thinginess,’ says Ryan. ‘We should be measuring the world by experiences and stories and relationships and conversations.’ The Find Seoul is presented by Frieze Live Seoul in partnership with Lisson Gallery, British Embassy Seoul, Factory International, Seoul Tourism Organization, Gangnam-gu Office, and Laurence Geoffrey’s. Ryan Gander’s ‘The Find’ Captures the Imagination in Seoul
Frieze on Instagram: "‘When I started making these moon jars,’ says @GlennLigon, ‘the ceramicist I worked with would say, “This is black.” And I would say, “No, that’s dark brown.” Or, “That’s very deep blue.” Or, “That’s grey.” It’s fascinating that colour is culturally specific.’ The New York artist is featuring at Frieze Seoul 2026 as part of @HauserWirth’s presentation. At the same time, he has his first solo exhibition in South Korea. ‘Black Moons’ at APMA Cabinet (@amorepacificmuseum) sees Ligon’s interpretation of one of Korea’s most beloved ceramic forms, the moon jar. In this video, he explains how he intervened in this traditionally white object by making it in black clay, and the technical challenges that posed. Ligon also discusses the drawing he is showing at the fair (‘the biggest I’ve ever made’), inspired by James Baldwin’s 1953 essay ‘Stranger in the Village’, which recounts the US writer’s experience as the only Black person in a remote village in Switzerland. In these works, Ligon explores the chance outcomes of using water-soluble blue pigments. ‘You can't make accidents happen. You just have to know when they’re good’. Across both presentations, Ligon explores colour both as a cultural construction, and a material with its own characteristics and responses. Frieze on Instagram: "‘That’s what makes Seoul so fascinating,’ says Korean artist Omyo Cho (@omyocho), ‘the fact that so much has emerged from almost nothing.’ Cho shows us a ‘slower side to Seoul’, including the the city’s old jewellery district, the hidden green haven of Baeksasil Valley, the rooftop of the @seoulmuseumofart archives and a Buddhist temple at the foot of Samgaksan Mountain. Jeong works primarily with moving images to explore war, nationhood, visual apparatus, and the relationship between the representation of place and memory.
